An 1811 "Four Language Ship's Paper" signed by both James Madison (4th President), and his Secratary of State James Madison (5th President).
The two men's signatures on this ship's paper, dated December 18, 1811, constituted authorization of the 68 ton Schooner, named the Presidentia, under the command of Captain John Truck, to proceed from the port of Glouster, MA to Bordeaux, France with her cargo of pickeled fish and oil.
The document is written in the four major languages of the day... French, Spanish, English, and Dutch, and provides the protection of the U.S. Government for the ship for one specific voyage. This paperwork also proves that the ship is not running contraband.
The document is in nice condition and both seals are intact. The wax underneath both seals has turned dark from humidity. This happened many years ago, and has been stabilized. Both signatures are dark and clear. There is wear to the left and top edges, one small hole in the upper left, overall fine presentation. Measures approximately 21¼"x16½".
A beautiful document autographed by these two remarkable Founding Fathers from Virginia.
Museum Quality Frame with acid-free clothe mattes and UV resistant plexiglass.
