In 1952, 35-year-old John Kennedy ran for the U.S. Senate with the slogan "Kennedy will do more for Massachusetts." In an upset victory, he defeated Republican incumbent Henry Cabot Lodge, Jr. by a margin of about 70,000 votes, bucking the national Republican sweep that accompanied Eisenhower's landslide victory. Kennedy went on to a second term in the Senate before winning the White House in 1960.
