An original Carte-de-Visite photograph signed in black ink "R E Lee" by Army of Northern Virginia General Robert E. Lee.
A formal portrait of Lee in a three-piece suit, taken on February 18, 1866. Printed on the back with the credit of premier Civil War photographer Mathew B. Brady: "M.B. Brady & Co's National photographic Portrait Gallery, No. 352 Pennsylvania Ave., Wash. D.C.".
Both the photo and the signature are beautiful, and in fine condition.
The Carte-de-Visite (CDV) measures 2 3/8" x 3 7/8".
The icon of the South to this day, Virginian Robert E. Lee's mastery of military strategy allowed him to keep the Union armies in Virginia at bay for almost three years. The son of Revolutionary War hero "Light Horse" Harry Lee, attended West Point and graduated second in his class.
