A document signed by Abraham Lincoln as President, dated August 18, 1864. This document authorizes a Proclamation (see below) and is sometimes referred to as a "Seal Affix" document. With the much rarer "full" version of Lincoln's signature (where he signs both first and last name).
The document reads in full:
"I hereby authorize and direct the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to my Proclamation, dated this day, and signed by me and for so doing this shall be his warrant."
Signed in full "Abraham Lincoln". (This is the rarer "full" version of Lincoln's signature).
The proclamation referred to in this document was issued on the same day, and recognized the port of Newport, Vermont, as "entitled to all the privileges in regard to the exportation of merchandise in bond to the British North American Provinces adjoining the United States..." Part of the "Northeast Kingdom", the city of Newport sits on the southern edge of Lake Memphremagog. Its proximity to the Canadian border, which bisects the lake, made it an important gateway for commerce between the United States and the Canadian province of Quebec during the Nineteenth Century.
In fine condition. The autograph is dark and extremely legible. The ink on the rest of the document, including the date, is lighter, but still quite legible. The document has minor spots and stains, but overall presents nicely.
Museum-caliber framing, with acid-free cloth mattes, UV Plexiglass, gilded wood frame moulding, etc.
Sold with Certificates of Authenticity from both The Autograph Source (Lifetime Guarantee) and independent third-party authenticator PSA/DNA.
