Autograph Book signed by 12 US Presidents and 30+ others

$8,499.00

An antique autograph book, with red velvet cover which was handed down through the generations of an extremely well-connected family, who selectively asked influential people of the day to autograph it.

Some of the autographs in this book are some of the nicest examples that we have seen from some of these people. It obviously was something that they took seriously when they signed it, likely at dinner parties and other engagements. Many of the authors added quotes or poetry, and others added the date or other inscriptions after their signatures.

The autograph book is signed by TWELVE UNITED STATES PRESIDENTS:

Sold with a Letter of Provenance from the great grandson of the original owner, who states:
"book passed down from my Great Grandfather Thomas L. Tally. Already a wealthy man as a Texas oil wildcatter, T.L. (who coined the phrase "moving pictures") was also organizer and owner of a coast to coast theater chain and creator of the First National Exhibitors Circuit. Contracts with Charlie Chaplin and Mary Pickford made him a very "sought after" man and he mixed it up in some very interesting circles as shown by the contents of this single book. Passed down to my Grandfather, Grandmother, Mother and Father who were also very affluent and world travelers, they continued the tradition of "passing the book" and sharing the signatures of previous individuals who had signed the book and subsequently having others sign it."

An excerpt from an article from "The Mystery Man of the Motion Pictures" below found at:

The organization of Artcraft Pictures Corporation is a typical instance of the shrewdness of Zukor and Garbutt. Mary Pickford was under contract to Paramount. When this contract expired she demanded a larger salary. As other producers were bidding for her services, Zukor was compelled to meet her terms. At this time T.L. Tally, a Scotchman of considerable wealth who made a hobby of the theatrical business, owned the principal motion picture house in Los Angeles. He had the contract with Paramount for the exhibition of that company's pictures.
