__________

The 1965 U.S. Open was legendary for many reasons. Gary Player owned a three-stroke lead over Kel Nagle heading into the final round, but on the 18th hole, Player’s 28-foot putt fell four inches short. An 18-hole playoff ensued Monday in which Player captured the title with a three-stroke win.
The emotions ran deep for Player as the South African-born golfer became the first international winner of the U.S. Open in 38 years. The victory gave Player the only U.S. Open win of his illustrious career, and more importantly, capped his career Grand Slam.
