The famous “Thompson For Sheriff” silk-screened poster, signed in the white margin below in pencil by the poster artist Thomas Benton.

This is almost identical to the version of the poster that Hunter S. Thompson used when he ran for Sheriff in 1970. There is a second version of the poster with “hunter thompson” printed at the top instead of just “thompson”.

Both versions of the poster were made for the 1970 campaign but Hunter chose the last name only to run. The other version was revived later in the 1990…  printed as souvenir versions of this poster that were sold in art galleries in Aspen, Colorado.

This version was also printed from the original screen at a later date, but is the rarer and more historically accurate version with last name only.

This poster was designed by Thompson and Benton for Thompson’s 1970 bid to become Sheriff of Pitkin County, Colorado (Aspen, CO).
